Education until the age of 16 has been compulsory since 1971, both primary and secondary schools are provided for free from both the government and the Church. These schools follow the British model, since Malta was under British influence until 1964
The University of Malta is free of charge for Maltese nationals or those with a valid residence permit, but due to funding issues, only certain courses are offered from year to year.
